AFGHAN
FOUNDATION

BACKGROUND

The Lamia Afghan Foundation was founded in 2008, and formally chartered as a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization in 2009.  Our goal is to work with and continue the missions started by Operation Care: "a non-profit, non- denominational, private charitable organization comprised of military and civilian volunteers dedicated to the welfare of the people of Afghanistan and, especially, to the children".  Our foundation greatly expands the ability to receive, ship and distribute donations to families across Afghanistan in an effort to empower them to improve their circumstances.  We also continue the mission of Operation Care both in our aid to the children of Afghanistan, and by providing US personnel stationed in remote areas with personal hygiene, comfort items, and other basic amenities that cannot be readily obtained in such isolated locations.

Much of the incredible humanitarian aid and country-building work that is done by US and coalition forces in the remote reaches of Afghanistan remains unsung to this day, because the media tends to focus on battles and fighting rather than humanitarian aid.  It is our hope to both shine a spotlight on the good works being done there by our military and civilian personnel, and to greatly expand the scope of such work through our organization.

HOPE |  COMPASSION | CARE
We have already provided a significant amount of aid through several drives, including:
  • Two baby and mother formula drives that provided more than 10, 000 pounds of liquid formula.
  • Several drives that provided shoes, jackets, toys and educational supplies to children in several regions, as well as building equipment and sewing machines for their villages and families, with more than 39,000 pounds of supplies sent and distributed.
  • A huge coordinated donation drive conducted simultaneously in Washington DC, Texas and San Francisco that produced over 90,000 pounds of goods for the Afghan children, their families and some of the US personnel in remote regions.  Donations included dozens of new shoes, carpet, building supplies, clothes, educational items of all types, strollers, etc.
  • Several independent drives and donations totaling more than 150,000 pounds including antibiotics, crutches, wheelchairs, shoes and cold weather supplies, toys, and nutrition items.

In the near future, we will be moving forward on building a new school, and we are looking into pairing schools or towns in the US with counterparts in Afghanistan in our adopt a school or town program, as well as providing micro loans to help start small businesses.  If you or your church, school or town are interested in such an activity, please contact us!
